The June 2011 edition of the National Geographic magazine cover article prompted a question that I had never considered, Did civilization generate religion or vice versa?
The article posits that the Göbekli Tepe, (pronounced Guh-behk-LEE TEH-peh) dates from 11,600 years ago and the title of the article Birth of Religion sets the tone. I am interested in the above question as well as the historical, scholarly view as well as the faith-based view
There is some thought that perhaps the desire for a group of people to develop a religion is genetic in origin. See below.

Kath, thanks for the article regarding a God gene, perhaps the reason people look for God in every civilization is related to the idea that people aggregate because they are social beings. Once aggregated, leadership naturally arises and our need for leadership is not limited to humankind. We need God to answer the timeless question, Is this all there is?
